Dialogue<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dialogue, that beautiful word. Dialogue, a practice which is tragically being lost these days. Dialogue evokes discussion, exchange, the intimacy of t\u00eate-\u00e0-t\u00eate conversations, or even the Dialogues of Plato in which the truth emerges from the interaction of two different points of view. Here, the two protagonists are the French and the Italian music styles of the late 17th to early 18th centuries, expressed through two instruments: the viola da gamba and the cello. Were it not for the fact that competition is not the aim here, this recording could have been titled Duels<\/em>, in reference to the practice of virtuoso competitions between two instrumentalists or composers common in the 17th and 18th centuries. Both Esm\u00e9 de Vries and Oleguer Aymam\u00ed play the cello and the viola da gamba. And they play their two instruments with the same passion for each, not preferring one over the other.<\/p>\n

The dialogues on this recording take place at two crossroads. First, the rivalry in France between two styles (or tastes), the Italian and French styles. And second, the struggle for the survival of the viola da gamba in the face of \u201cthe pretensions of the cello.\u201d From the end of the 16th century and throughout the 17th century, Italian music gradually influenced the music of all of Europe. The great Italian innovators\u2014led by Monteverdi\u2014their operas, their writings, and their instrumental techniques spread far and wide, first to the German states and then to Paris.<\/p>\n

Art of Nature was born out of a desire to create, communicate, exchange, share, and nurture musical and human links between several close musician friends. Each project of the ensemble is an opportunity to explore the confluence of what we experience visually in nature and what touches us in the vibration of the gut strings. Esm\u00e9 de Vries seeks to convey these profound experiences in concerts (sometimes outside in nature) and through her recordings (Bach am Bach<\/em>, 2023 and Dialoguer<\/em>, 2024).<\/p>\n

Esm\u00e9\u2019s musical career has been inspired by her teacher, Bruno Cocset, under whose direction she completed her master’s degree in baroque cello, and by the luthier, Charles Rich\u00e9, whose viola da gamba and cello she plays. She completed her master’s degree in viola da gamba with Guido Balestracci.<\/p>\n

Esm\u00e9 is a member of the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and plays at the great concert halls of the world. She teaches cello and viola da gamba because the richness of life comes from the sharing of our knowledge and experiences.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
