SCHUMANN LIEDER

The German word “innig” – a mixture of tenderness and heart-felt emotion – captures the essence of Robert Schumann’s Lieder. It is surely one of the reasons I love this repertoire. The Lieder seem to be so unashamedly human, with joy and pain intertwined. There is a vulnerability and simplicity in these Lieder, and yet they are crowned with harmonic genius.

I have often been asked how a modern woman can possibly sing Frauenliebe und Leben with sincerity. I would answer, that although – quite obviously – the emotions shown in the cycle do not demonstrate the complete range of our lives today, they still are a reality, and form an integral, genuine part of the human drama.

The texts of Rückert, Heine, and Byron stand on their own merit on a level of great artistry. Particularly poems like Mein schöner Stern or Zum Schluss move my being.

I hope from my heart that you will feel it, too.
