36 Pieces for Piano
Each of these 36 pieces for Piano carries with it a title. Consequently, with only a few exceptions, they all depend on one of the composer’s two ways of conceiving musical composition.
The first approach, which he calls «specific», consists in elaborating a work from a given source of inspiration. It is by no means a question of imitative or descriptive music — an approach which the composer totally repudiates — but rather of a transposition on both the suggestive and the purely musical levels. (The work extracted from the title must be self-sufficient.)
This first conception of musical composition can be broadly contrasted with the second, which is uniquely concerned with developing musical ideas arising spontaneously in the mind and consciously inscribing them within the traditional forms — these architectural modes so marvelously fashioned by time.
Unlike the works of the second type (which the composer has also produced and which will be the object of a later album), the «specific» compositions can be altogether different from one another in character and appearance: the substance and the form have been engendered, so to speak, by the source of inspiration.
